From linear to circular: Revor's circular mattresses
Revor, a Belgian manufacturer of beds and mattresses, unveiled its 100% circular mattress at the Interzum trade fair in Cologne. A true innovation within the industry towards sustainable and environmentally conscious production.
"We have been working for over two years on the development of the Circular mattress and have brought various versions to market during this period to meet the diverse needs of retailers and consumers," says CEO Jan Maes. The latest and improved version of the mattress was presented at the Trend Forum of the Interzum trade fair in Cologne, while the previous version already won the innovation award at the Brussels Furniture Fair in 2021.
A strong partnership with Niaga®
For this development, Revor collaborates with partner Niaga®, who guided them throughout the entire process of circular design and provides the patented click-unclick adhesive that is essential for producing the mattress. Niaga®'s click-unclick adhesive loses its effectiveness upon heating, allowing all layers of the mattress to be easily separated from each other. Each layer can then be recycled separately into new, equivalent raw materials. A new mattress is then made from the recycled materials, thereby retaining the complete value of the raw materials.
The mattress is entirely made up of only two raw materials, metal and polyester. These are used to manufacture all the different parts of the mattress, from the entire core to the smallest detail in the mattress cover, such as the zipper.
A mattress with a passport: Transparency and sustainability
The circular mattress is a mattress with a passport. On the label of the mattress, you can find a QR code that refers to the product passport. The passport provides complete transparency on how the mattress is composed and where the different raw materials come from. It also tells how you can return the mattress at the end of its lifespan, which is ultimately one of the most important steps in a circular product.
Expanding the Circular range
In addition to the original circular mattress, Revor has also brought three additional versions to the market. One of the versions has an extra layer of mini pocket springs on top of the circular core, which provides improved zoning and support. This version, like the original mattress, is 100% circular because the mini pockets are also made from polyester and metal and can therefore be fully recycled into new pocket springs.
Then there are two versions that use the well-known and traditional comfort layers of latex and visco. These versions are finished with a comfort layer of 3cm latex or visco on top of the circular core. As a result, they are 80% circular, since visco and latex are not circular materials.
"By working partly with recognizable materials in these two versions, we lower the threshold for retailers and consumers to choose a circular product. This way, they can take a first step towards a sustainable choice and reduce the final amount of waste at the end of a mattress's lifespan. These two mattresses are comparable in comfort to the classic mattress. This makes the step towards sustainability more familiar," says Jan Maes.
With this, Revor has taken a significant step towards a circular economy and proves that sustainability does not have to come at the expense of comfort, quality, or ergonomics. With the range of circular mattresses, the company offers an innovative and sustainable product that contributes to a better future for our planet.
